This information I got from Internet, which impressed me. This is a critical writing after I’ve done my holiday research.
In October 2012, the metropolitan museum of art in New York held a called Faking it: Manipulated Photography exhibition before Photoshop. As the name suggests, all of the photos on display here are modified and manipulated. At the same time, another exhibition in the hall in front of it that is named After Photoshop: Manipulated Photography in the Digital Age. It worth mentioning that the exhibition which is named Faking it: Manipulated Photography exhibition before Photoshop is sponsored by the inventor of the Adobe Photoshop, this is the first time they sponsor large-scale exhibition in the museum.
Since the release of Photoshop 1.0 in 1990, Adobe has been reprimanded the software undermined the authenticity of photography. And they are interested in this exhibition, they want to take this opportunity to show people that before the release of Photoshop, manipulated photography has already been widely applied to news, politics, advertising, business, art, and other field of photography, but at that time things all happened in the darkroom. Faking it not only traces the medium’s complex and changing relationship to visual truth, but also significantly revises our understanding of photographic history.
The truth of photography has already been questioned by people since its birth, the emergence of Photoshop just put this problem once again brought to the front of the public. Photoshop and a series of image processing software is trying to digital the darkroom technology of film age, such as adjusting the contrast, local area increase or decrease exposure, daub and synthesis and so on. The most important thing of these two exhibitions is that they achieve mastery through a comprehensive of the manipulated photography history. It shows that the” purity” of photography has neither been set up in the film age nor destroyed by the digital age. Photography is never a simple art history, it is not simple civilization, it is interwoven by all sorts of sociology, anthropology, psychology factors.
